For UK solicitors, a website is a regulated communication. The Solicitors Regulation Authority expects firms to be transparent about price and service, to display proof of regulated status, and to market themselves honestly. This checklist walks through what your site needs to pass, and why each item also happens to win more clients.
1. Publish price and service information
If your firm carries out any of the SRA's specified services, you must publish cost information on your website. Those services include residential conveyancing, uncontested probate, motoring offences, immigration (excluding asylum), certain employment tribunal claims, debt recovery, and business licensing applications.
For each, set out: total cost or a clear basis for it, what is and is not included, likely disbursements, key stages of the matter, and typical timescales. Vague "call for a quote" pages do not satisfy the rule.
2. Display the SRA digital badge
Regulated firms must show the SRA's clickable digital badge, which verifies your authorisation. It reassures clients and is a mandatory trust signal. Place it in the footer so it appears on every page.
3. Show your regulatory information
Include your SRA number, the firm's regulated status, and details of complaints procedures including the Legal Ombudsman. These belong somewhere findable, typically the footer and a dedicated regulatory or terms page.
4. Market honestly
- No misleading claims about outcomes, expertise or standing.
- Handle testimonials and case studies carefully and truthfully, with client consent.
- Avoid guarantees about results, legal outcomes are never certain.
5. Accessibility and data protection
While not strictly SRA transparency items, a compliant firm also respects UK GDPR (a clear privacy policy, lawful contact-form data handling) and aims for accessible design under WCAG. Both protect your reputation and reduce risk.
Compliance and conversion pull together
It is tempting to treat these rules as a burden, but they align neatly with what clients already want: clear pricing, proof you are legitimate, and honesty. Firms that embrace transparency tend to convert better because they remove the uncertainty that makes prospects hesitate.
The takeaway
Run your site against this checklist, price information, the digital badge, regulatory details, honest marketing, and data/accessibility basics. Pass it, and you satisfy the SRA while presenting the openness that turns cautious visitors into clients.
